Platz 8 zeigt nicht das Potential des Teams
Project 1 – AO hatte ein tolles WEC-Rennwochenende in Monza. Vom Ergebnis her sieht es zunächst nicht so aus, aber die Zusammenarbeit im Team, das Zusammenspiel des neuen Line-ups, die Technik, die Boxenstopps, im Grunde hat alles gestimmt. Darüber ist Teamchef Axel Funke dann auch sehr zufrieden. „Aber es ist und bleibt Sport und wenn man dann trotz schnellster Rennrunde Achter in der GT AM wird, passt das nicht zu den eigenen Erwartungen“, schlussfolgert Funke. Das bestätigte auch Efrin Castro, das neue Teammitglied in Monza. Der Dominikaner fühlt sich geehrt, an diesem Event und als Teil des Project 1 – AO Teams bei den 6 Stunden von Monza teilnehmen zu dürfen. Er lobt die Zusammenarbeit mit allen im Team. “So professionell, nichts wird dem Zufall überlassen. Ich bedauere, dass ich nicht mehr sportliche Erfahrung mitbringen konnte, die es uns erlaubt hätten, früher konkurrenzfähig zu sein. Matteo (Cairoli) musste für meinen Geschmack zu sehr pushen.”
Matteo Cairoli: „Offen gesagt, es hätte mehr drin sein können. Ich bekam eine ‚Drive through penalty‘ wegen Track Limits. Ich habe zu sehr gepusht, um das Podium zu erreichen und das hätte ich nicht tun sollen. Mein Gefühl ist, dass wir jetzt nicht das bekommen, was wir verdient haben.“
Für Guilherme de Oliveira war es das zweite Mal in den Farben von Project 1 – AO. Er lobte Matteo für seine Unterstützung und sein Engagement, um ein Spitzenergebnis zu erzielen. „Dass es nicht geklappt hat, gehört zum Sport. Es ist schwer zu sagen, aber ich weiß, dass wir in der Lage waren, um das Podium zu kämpfen und wir hatten kein Glück mit dem Moment, als das Safety Car auf die Strecke musste. Aber abgesehen davon bin ich froh, dass ich diese Gelegenheit bekommen habe und ich blicke auf eine großartige Veranstaltung zurück“.
Teamchef Axel Funke erkennt direkt nach dem Rennen, es ist nicht das verdiente Resultat für die Mannschaft, die in den heißen Bedingungen sehr hart gearbeitet hat. Er weiß um die Qualitäten des Project 1 – AO Teams: die Boxenstopps liefen hervorragend, der Porsche 911 RSR war gut vorbereitet, was auch die schnellste Runde zeigt. „Das Auto läuft gut, hat keinerlei Schäden erlitten und kann jetzt für das vorletzte Rennen der Saison in Fuji reisebereit gemacht werden.”
8th place does not show the potential of the team
Project 1 – AO had a great WEC race weekend in Italy at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. After a promising start to the weekend, the teamwork, the technology, the pit stops, and the interaction of the new line-up, things came together for a promising 6 Hours of Monza.
“When you finish eighth in the LMGTE AM class despite having the fastest race lap, it can be a bit disappointing, but that’s racing,” said Team Manager Axel Funke remarked. “We had a strong group, and everyone did an incredible job.”
Efrin Castro, the newest driving addition to the team echoed Funke’s thoughts. He praised the cooperation of everyone in the team. “So professional, nothing is left to chance. I regret not being able to bring more sporting skills that would have allowed us to be competitive earlier. Matteo (Cairoli) had to push too hard now for my taste.”
Matteo Cairoli: “Frankly, there could have been more. I got a drive-through penalty for track limits. I pushed too hard to get the podium and I shouldn’t have done that. My feeling is that we are not getting what we deserve now.”
For Guilherme de Oliveira it was the second time in the colours of Project 1 – AO. He praised Matteo for his support and commitment to achieving a top result. “That it didn’t work out is part of the sport. It’s hard to say, but I know we were in a position to fight for the podium, and we were not lucky with the moment when the safety car had to go on track. But apart from that, I’m glad I got this opportunity and I look back on a great event.”
Team manager Axel Funke recognised the disappointment for the team, who worked incredibly hard, right after the race. He knows about the qualities of the Project 1 – AO team. The pit stops went excellently, and the Porsche 911 RSR was well prepared, as evidenced by the fastest lap. “The car is good, has not suffered any damage, and can now be charged up for the penultimate race of the season in Fuji.”
